EMT Initial Course Description

Take the first step toward a career in Emergency Medical Services

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Initial course provides the education, hands-on training, and practical skills needed to begin working in the fast-paced field of emergency medical services. Students will learn how to assess and care for patients experiencing medical emergencies and traumatic injuries, provide lifesaving interventions, and safely prepare patients for transport to definitive care.

Throughout the course, students develop essential EMT skills including patient assessment, CPR and resuscitation, airway management and ventilation, oxygen administration, bleeding and shock management, medical and trauma care, splinting, emergency childbirth, and safe patient movement and transportation. Classroom instruction is reinforced through practical skills training, realistic patient-care scenarios, and clinical/field experiences designed to build confidence and prepare students for real-world emergency situations.

EMTs are often among the first healthcare professionals to care for a patient during an emergency. The role requires compassion, teamwork, communication, critical thinking, and the ability to remain calm and make sound decisions in challenging situations. EMTs care for patients of all ages and work alongside other EMT professionals, firefighters, law enforcement, nurses, physicians, and other members of the healthcare team.

Upon successful completion of the program and required certification process, students will be prepared to pursue National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) certification and Connecticut EMT certification through the Connecticut Department of Health.

Wether your goal is to begin a career in EMS, pursue advanced EMS certification, enter another healthcare profession, or gain the skills to make a difference in your community, EMT training is where that journey can begin.

No previous EMS experience is required. Come ready to learn, work as a team, and develop skills that can make a difference when someone needs help most.
